Cypress School is a non-public school in Petaluma for students with autism and similar disabilities and moderate to severe behavior problems and cognitive deficits. Of the eleven students, eight are non-verbal, using PECS, signs and gestures (and beginning to use AT devices). All of the students have functional academic and skill goals focusing on vocational, independent living, social communication and sensory regulation skill development. Skills include watering, picking and delivering vegetables, using our washer and dryer, planning, shopping, preparing, cooking and serving a hot meal, participating in school chores- watering plants, sweeping, wiping tables and chairs and van washing. Creative Arts include music and art activities. Social skills are developed in team activities including playing board games and outdoor ball sports as well as a weekly field trip.

Sensory Regulation activities include swinging, tramp jumping, treadmill, massage, ball rolling, blanket squeezing, swimming, hiking, bowling and bike riding.

Our Occupational Therapist develops goals and trains Teacher Aides in implementing the goals through instruction, materials and curriculum. Direct hours must be performed by the Occupational Therapist with the student and Teacher Aide. Consult hours should include some aide/student direct training, some aide/student observation of OT activity implementation and some goal instruction, materials and curriculum development and reporting progress.

The 8 hours per week of direct service can be implemented with the Occupational Therapist and the student, and their aide in the Occupational Therapy Room, school classrooms, kitchen, music and art room, grocery store, park, garden, and horseback riding.

The Occupational Therapist can provide direct service and/or direct the aide as to implementation of the goals, observe the aide implementing the goals, and/or can modify and develop instruction, curriculum and materials. The School Director, Teacher, Aides, Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist work together to encourage our students to regulate their senses throughout the day. We are working together to build in opportunities for sensory regulation and initiation all day long.
